Where is Mendenhall Glacier. Hold this on your bucket list.

I will not be writing in this blog next week.  I am traveling single (on a cruise in Canada).

Where is Mendenhall Glacier ?  Hold this on your bucket list.

In the port of Juneau.  About 10 minutes from town.

Is it worth seeing ?

I think it is.

I’ve been there, a many of time, to re-view again !

Sometimes, I don’t even take a shore tour, and just buy the transfers, out to see the glacier, from town (such as, just outside of a HA ship, near Red Onion Saloon.  The cost is about $25 round trip.

Another good price package in seeing the glacier, is when including this with a whale watching tour.

Another is … Canoeing with a tour group, all the way out to the glacier.

You can even ride the city bus for a couple of dollars !

Or why not, take a helicopter up on top of the glacier !

The above are some of the ways I have had the opportunity to see this glacier.

2013 Alaska Fishing Season is upon us

Fishing in Alaska is enjoyed by so many.  Some folks fly up, just to fish.  Others fly up early, to fish prior to a cruise.  Others, go fishing, while in ports, on their cruise.

The two ports I notice folks fishing the most, while on their cruise, is Ketchikan and Juneua.  My father and I fished, while in Juneau.  We were fishing for King Salmon.  If they're not a certain size, they have to be thrown back.

Bringing home the fish you caught is fun too.  You begin by getting it smoked and packaged, as soon as your daily fishing trip is over.  The company you fish with, has the info you need.  The cost is not in the smoking of the fish, but shipping them home.  Not much more cost than had you bought salmon in the store.  So this way, you can enjoy your own.

Happy Alaska Fishing Season !

What makes Skagway my favorite Alaska Cruise Port

Skagway.  The name itself sounds, to me, rugged.  Seems like a good name for this “shoot-out” looking town.

From Wikipedia: “Skagway (originally spelled Skaguay) is from the Tlingit name for the area, "Skagua" or "Shԍagwei" meaning "a windy place with white caps on the water”.

Not sure I’ve noticed the wind.  However, the snow capped mountains are another reason, I love this little town.

Yes, very small town.  When the ship pulls up, and you’re out on your balcony, it looks like a triangle shape or upside down Y shape little town.  With the mountains behind the town.  And mountains behind you.

Another reason I like this port, is that the ships usually pull in forward, so coming in, you can see the town from the left, from your balcony. The two main docks are about the same distance from the town (3-4 blocks).  There is transportation to the town for about $2 roundtrip.

On the right, is the rail road track.  Doesn’t matter which two main docks the ship is at, the track is right there.  So folks taking the White Pass Train and Yukon tour, have very little distance to walk.  The ship on the right, will be next to a rock bank, where people have put interesting graffitti.

That’s another reason I love this town.  I love train rides.  For me, I find that trains provide, much more room than buses or airlines.  Yes, it does rock around !

The train travels a narrow gauge up to the Yukon.  Matter of fact, you can extend your journey, by bus, and go further into the Yukon, which is what I prefer.  You do need your passports to cross into Canada.  So you must remember to bring this off the ship, for the tour.

Lots of history up the trails of this railroad.    Check out the some history and pictures.

The next reason I love this little town, is the town itself.  As mentioned above, it looks like a little shoot-out town.  There’s one main road to walk down, and it’s filled with lots of stores for shopping.

I
n general, that’s how I spend my time, each 12 times I have visited.  I take the White Pass RR and then I shop !  Two passions of mine.

Like any port, more tours are formed each year.  There’s much to choose.  Some for the out-doors folks and those with less walking (Railroad is the best for this).

Know that many Jewelry stores from the Caribbean, come up to Alaska, during it’s cruising season.  So if you’re wanting great prices like the Caribbean, Alaska is another great destination to choose.

If you have yet to go to Alaska, WHY ?

If you have yet to go to Alaska, WHY ?

Cold ?

Yes, it can be.  And the weather is also unpredictable.  You could plan to go in July, the warmest time, and it have a cold front come in !  It’s true !

Do you not go to work and miss your paycheck, cause it’s snow and cold outside ?  Then know, it’s not worth missing Alaska, just cause it could be cold !

In general, I can not stand cold weather !  I seldom go out, at home, when it’s cold !  However, I’ve been to Alaska 12 times, and I only “wish” I could go, 2-3 times, EVERY SUMMER !

I’ve been fortunate, I’ve seen very little bad weather in Alaska.  That's why many folks like to go when I go ... due to my luck !  Even folks in Alaska will say, "wow, today is a day we've not seen in awhile".  I reply, it's always good for me.
One year, May 10, it was rainy cold while in Juneau.  Yet one year, May 5, it was 75 degees, after crossing the “date line” from Japan, on a 19 day cruise !

I tend to go a lot in May , due to pricing, so I take a chance on it being colder, or just had another snow before I arrive (never has it been in the roads; usually, just in the mountains, and last year, Seward had snow on the side of the road, as we left by train, headed to Anchorage).

I also go a lot in September, again, due to pricing.  Plus, I love all the end of the season sales !  I’m a shopper !

No matter ... As much as I can not stand cold, the mountains and the serenity Alaska offers, if 200% worth it !  The eagles ... The whales ... The dungenous crab !  All worth it !  And most the time, I need very little more than a light jacket !  Some days in Ketchikan, it gets so hot while there, we're pealing off the layers !  It's worth it !

Cost ?

The airfare can be pricy.  Keep in mind, lowest pricing on airfare is usually round trip Seattle cruises.

North or Southbound cruises, where you do touch Anchorage, is often around $1,000 pp (about $250 pp more than r/t Seattle).  However, the cruise are often cheaper, so it can even out.

Being a totally Lynchburg airport flyer, instead, sometimes, I will fly in and out of Washington (IAD only), and then take the train up and back, from Lynchburg.

Also, as mentioned above, I often go in May or September, to keep pricing down.

And, Holland America often has last minute cruise pricing, and this is why I have gone to many times, to Alaska, on Holland America.  But know … Even though you’ll see great pricing, a month or so before sailing, the great rates also come out by around January !  So you don’t have to wait till April to decide on a May cruise !

What’s really pricy is a package that includes land.  The best advice I have, if it’s just too much for you, but you want to include land is … (1)  See Holland America and even Princess land specials.  (2) Call me, and I can suggest, “simple” packages, that you can put together, that includes Anchorage only, or Anchorage & Denali.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat, to get descent rates, so you can go !  All you have to do is call me, and I’ll give you as much scoop as I can !

Haven’t found time ?

Ewww, that’s sad.  We’re not promised tomorrow.  Get Alaska on your priority list now !
