Alaska cruise - Roundtrip Seattle or South/Northbound ?

Please know, roundtrip Seattle cruises are often higher than North or Southbound cruises.  Choose not to get stuck on one concept, like roundtrip Seattle !

I just priced a Royal Caribbean cruise for a caller in a balcony.  From Seattle was $ 1700+ and Southbound was $1200+.  $500 pp savings to invest in airfare to do Southbound, which offered a better glacier, more time in port, and did not leave out Ketchikan.

Alaska Bound. Suggested Shore Excursions

Ketchikan.  If you have time, you want to visit the famous Creek (shop too) at the very back of the town (you can see from the ship).  You can even take a little tram ride for $1 up to the Westmark hotel, where you can usually see the ships.  And if you go out front, you can see Totem poles !

One that sells out and is one of the most popular (once it sells out, they stop showing this availability) .... Deadliest Catch.  Here you board a fishing boat that was once used in the Aleutian Islands.  Matter of fact, there’s a short video inside, where you will see that this boat almost capsized.  When I went, they had unlimited hot chocolate and they do serve a salmon snack.  Once they leave Ketchikan, they take a left into Indian waters, which they have to rent to go into.  After a short while, they bring up a huge crab pot, with about 5 different kind of crabs.  They also bring up some other things.  They continue on, and then stop to fee the eagles and the eagles come pouring down for great pictures ! Of course, they sell all kinds of things with their name on it.  I think I have a long black shirt and a vest and I bought some little floaters to bring home to friends.  I would do this again.

Lumber Jack Show.  This is commercialized, yet people like it.  Done this, don’t need to do again !  From the ship, you can see the location.  If facing the town, it’s to the far right, about a block back.  They have a big store, where you can buy stuff.

Saxman Native Village is not the same as the Potlatch Totem Park.  The park is a walk in the woods.  The village will show carving and dancers.  If you buy the Village, on your own, once off ship, it does NOT include the dancers (demonstration).  I looked at 2 from “Shore Excursion Group” and they mentioned NO demonstration.  This is given to the cruise lines (but again, be sure it’s included with Royal Caribbean).

Fishing.  Many folks do it here.

Don’t know if popular.  Cooking class.  I did this here.  They just brought out the food and showed us nothing.  Loved the food but wanted more.  Could have changed (?).

I don’t know how many folks have done the horse & buggy, but it is only suppose to be offered thru the ship.  I’ve not done.

Don’t do the eagle rapture center here.  Unless it’s changed, a city tour would be better !
Boat ride to the Lighthouse.  It was ok.  Too  many other things to do !

Icy Strait.  If you look this up on line, the maroon/red type building is all there is here !  Inside the building, I believe is ice cream and maybe chips.  Not much else unless they’ve changed.

Zip Lining.  People love it.  Takes about 1 ½ hours to get to the top.  You come down just past the town but across, where folks might (?) see you if they know it’s you !

Cooking class.  I did this.  You first grill yourself, salmon and maybe halibut (?).  Then you come into the class.  They teach you how to make a salsa and a dip for the fish (?).  Kind of forgotten.  Enjoyed !

The bear watching … I wouldn’t waste time.  If you get lucky to see bear upclose in Denali, this could be a total joke for you.  I saw one bear, far far away, so it looked like a dot.  What was scary, we had guides in front and in back with rifles.  I worried more about if a bear was going to jump out onto the path.  Won’t do that again !

Juneau.  I’ve done lots here !  Lots of shopping here !  Notice the T-Shirt factory under the tam wires.  Great deals cause they provide in bulk.  Might find baseball caps for $2.

My favorite whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier.  You can buy this tour as a combo.  The little bit extra to go to Mendenhall is totally worth it !  FYI, if you are NOT buying a tour, once off ship, you pay $25 (?) and they will take you to Mendenhall and bring you back !  You can take the city bus for $2 (?), but once the driver lets you off, you have to walk up in there, to get there !  FYI, I’ve never gone into the conservatory there.  I have walked on the wood path before you get to the road that takes you closer to the glacier, and there was a bear cup under the path !

Helicopter onto the glacier.  Did this years ago.  Love it !  They provide the boots.  There’s a maximum weight, so be sure to look.

Fishing.  Dad and I did this here and had fun.  I’m the only one who caught 2 big enough to save.  We paid to have them smoked and shipped home.  The shipping is the expensive part, but not any more expensive than buying good salmon at the store, and this is yours.  It’s vacuum packed.  We saved for years.  We kept in freezer; don’t know if you have to.

Water rafting.  I’ve not done it, but folks love it !

Canoe ride to the glacier.  My friend Nancy (she's 80 this year) & I did this.  Oh yeah, you have to paddle all the way across the lake, but the guide helps much in the paddling and if you have lots of folks there (we only had 3 & it was in September), it helps.  This was great.  I’m so glad to get this off my bucket list cause I wanted it so bad !  It “does” take you closer to the glacier than you will be able to walk to (about ½ more).

Go into a mine.  This is really neat.  But this is one of the last things I’ve done in Juneau cause there is so much to do !

Gardens.  Their trees are upside down.  The roots are in the air.  Interesting.

Tram.  I love this.  You can look this up on line.  I never buy ticket till I get there to see the weather.  Probably $26.  Then I go up and eat dungenous crab !  You can buy one cluster for $12 (?) and they often have all you can eat.  You can call before you go and find out !  They have Alaska beer on tap too.  Once up there, there’s some eagles, etc.  But I go for the food.  You can view the town from up top !  I do this, even if I’ve bought a tour that day, after I’ve gone shopping.

Red Onion Saloon.  Not a tour, just a place to stop off at.  They have beer and they have entertainment.  The floor is saw dust !  You can look this up online.

Don’t do the pan for gold.  You will do this in Fairbanks and will love it so much, in compared to what this offers.  You actually go in the woods and to a creek.  What a joke !

I think there’s a low cost dog sledding here (?).  Haven’t done.  Sells out quick.

Skagway.    I love this little shoot out town.  If you have time to go to the town, they have a bus for $2 (?) round trip.  Ride the bus to the end of the street, after going around the church and get off.  Start at the end of the street and come towards the ship !  If you don’t do this way, that’s ok too, cause the bus picks up at the end of the street and brings you back to the ship too.  I do it this way, cause there’s a small T-Shirt factory here, that has some of your lowest rates !

I always do the train !  You can do round trip.  Or you can do train, and they take the longer tour that takes you into the Yukon.  Be careful, you want the train first; you want to ride up first; know what you are buying.  And the better choice is morning.  When riding up the mountain, YOU SIT ON THE LEFT !  Get in a car, not right at the engine, that everyone is not getting on, and sit on the left.  Action is on the left.  If you do train second, all the folks, who road up on the right, get to move to the left, and all you will get is left over seats on the left.  If you don’t want to do train, you can do bus up and back.  You need YOUR PASSPORT !  Meet extra 30 min early and everyone check to see if they have their passport.  Also, if taking morning, once the ship is cleared, the train is right by the ship, so again, you want to be one of the first off !

Days of ’98 show.  You can find this online.  I enjoyed.  Just a little play.  Probably cost $20 and you can probably find a coupon somewhere in town.  But again, this is good if you don’t plan to shop.

Red Dog Saloon.  You can buy this as a tour, but instead, I just go there.  Girls dressed in can-can outfits.  You can buy lunch here.  Beer on tap.  Have a little store.  And you can pay $5 to take a tour upstairs in the bordello.

Liarsville salmon bake.  I didn’t like it.  It was raining.  Nancy did this again for the 3rd time this year.  Do not know why she likes it !  I think you’ve got a salmon bake in Fairbanks (?).

Extension Bridge.  Sorry I am too afraid to do !

Dog sledding.  Costly here !  Friends did it but they never told me what they thought.

Old Timey Cars.  This only takes you out of town as far as the cemetery.  My folks did this.  They are great to take a picture of and maybe to ride in, but I wouldn’t use my day for this.  You can see pictures online.

Also, for our customers, we offer tours, to help keep you off the “net” and from getting hurt.

Which Alaska Land/Cruise Package. See sample 2014 cruise line comparison. See August 2014 customized package. Or wait and buy what other folks don't want

Which Alaska package is the “big all time question” ?  When cruisers call me asking for a price, this is my question to them, and when I call the cruise line, this is the question that is asked of me …“Which package?”.

If you have never looked at an Alaska Cruise Tour package, know that, it may not be as there are All-Inclusive Resorts around the World, but there’s LOTS to choose from !

So, how does one narrow it down ?

First, determine if you must have a certain cruise line ?  If yes, that actually narrow down your options a lot !  If not, the first question is, are you ready for a 6 Star Cruise Line, such as Regent, where drinks, shore excursions, gratuities are all included ?  However, with them, you will need to apply a separate land package.

If not 6 star, then 3-5 star.  Are you looking for something nice ? What about the King, Holland America, or the Queen, Princess, of Alaska.  This is how these lines were referred as, years back.  Royal Caribbean and Celebrity get great reviews too.  And the great thing about narrowing it down to RCI or Celebrity, the tours are the same, so that narrows it down !  Norwegian just decide to enter the land market, so I am not as familiar with their product.  And I hear, Carnival is coming back with land in 2014 (?).

So if you have all these cruise lines to look at, that’s a LOT, as I said earlier !  You can’t just call an agent or the cruise line, even if calling all of them, and say, how much is an Alaska Cruise Tour package !  When I first got into this business, I did this to Princess, and I thought the res agent was going to fall on the floor laughing.

In honesty, it’s like calling a car dealer and saying, how much are your cars !  He needs to know, what kind of tires do you want, can it be used or must it be new, will one on our lot work or do you want us to order you a special color … On and on !  Like car choices, Alaska Cruise Tours can be narrowed down, but not without many questions answered.  And even then, the tours have to be waded through !

If I had my preference, my first choice would still be to look at the cruise portion first, then look at their choice in tours.  It use to be that I could start off with asking, do you want 2 glaciers (Holland America and Princess) and 3 ports, or do you want one glacier (RCI & Celebrity) and 4 ports, but now, the cruise lines do not always follow this way of thought.  Either HA or Princess will leave out one of the glaciers or RCI/Celebrity leaves out a port !  You have to be careful of this, and I’m serious, when it comes to RCI/Celebrity (I’m not going if the cruise leaves out Ketchikan or Juneau).

So if the cruise line of choice is up in the air, and you aren’t leaning towards how many glaciers or ports, then every cruise line has to be looked at !  So next start with, how many nights can you be away ?  Sometimes folks say, what about 10 nights ?  I would probably look at RCI/Celebrity, but maybe the others have good opportunities too (changes from year to year).  Too often, 10 days means you fly into Fairbanks, take the rail to Denali, do the Park, then a night in Anchorage and fly home.  You see nothing but Denali Park.  In my opinion, if this is all you get out of the deal, bypass Fairbanks and do a package only from Anchorage to Denali !

If you only have 10N’s, the best wish of an option (I haven’t looked at 2014), would be if Princess offered 2N’s Fairbanks and one night Denali.  Or if you have 11N’s, and Princess offers a 2nd night in Denali.  Cause if you can get by without having to stay a night in Anchorage, this can narrow down your number of needed days.

But if you want a night in Mt McKinley with Princess or a night in Telkeetna with RCI/Celebrity, or a night in Anchorage, then you need more time.  10 or 11N’s is not going to do it.

You ask, do I need more time ?

For me, I am not going to Fairbanks if I don’t at least get to ride on the Sternwheeler and see the Gold Dredge.  And I don’t usually choose a tour package that only has one (or, I make sure to come in a day earlier and get the other one in).  So to do these tours, you need to be in Fairbanks 2N’s (The 1st night, you arrive between 3pm-1am and the next day you do the tours) !

With no personal desire to do any hiking, I can actually live with one day in Denali.  However, depending on the time you arrive to Denali will determine the National Park tour that you can fit in.  Though I do not personally have to take the longest tour, Kantishna (12-13 hours - which is not available through the cruise line), I don’t really want less than the Tundra Tour (6-8 hours).  The Natural History Tour (3-4 hours) is usually what is offered with most cruise line packages, however, select cruise lines like Princess and HA will often allow you to upgrade for $60pp (2013 rates).  However, due to the times arriving to Denali, there may not be enough time there, for the upgrade to be available.

Vacationers have to decide for themselves, their reasoning for wanting at least 2N’s in Denali:
      1.       More options for going into the National Park.
      2.       Enough time to purchase the Cabin Night Show.  I really don’t care to go to Denali and not get to see this show !
      3.       Hiking or walking, option plane or helicopter over Mt McKinley (other optional tours available), or just some extra time to enjoy nature.

As far as whether you want to include a night in Anchorage is again, choice.  I love flying into Anchorage because of the powdered looking snow cap mountains.   Anchorage has mountains all around it, with the area being flat.  It’s neat to see all the float planes, near the airport, parked on the lake.  And there’s shopping (Market) and lots of places to eat.  Just passing through is enough for me, and for many folks, as long as they get to see it or touch the ground, it’s enough too.  There’s more adventures just outside of Anchorage.  However, sometimes you have to stay in Anchorage a night, and then begin your options the next day; Princess Cruise Line often just passes through or stops for lunch.

Another way of determining which cruise line or tour package, is if you would like to stay a night close to Mt McKinley (Princess) or Telkeenta (RCI/Celebrity) or even Alyeska; there are other options.  Staying in these locations give you even more back to nature feeling.  You can look these locations up on the “net” to see if this is something you want to include.

Know that, you can go to Alaska and see the land, without ever having to buy a package.  There are folks who rent cars.  Know, that car rentals usually charge extra fees to pick up and drop off at different locations.  Another options is just buying the rail from Alaska Railroad (Remember, you want to have the “dome car” option).  Understandably, your biggest expense, besides the railroad is the hotel cost.  A package from Anchorage to Denali and then back to meeting the ship is fairly do-able, however, when you start including Fairbanks and select hotels in Denali, the cost can often add up more when doing this on your own (I’ve tried to piece it together, on my own, for groups; your biggest problem is transportation, if you don’t have a car, to tours like Sternwheeler or to dinner, etc).

Remember, when you do comparisons, you can “not” compare a Northbound package against a Southbound package, because the Southbound package is naturally more (unless you book early).  Vacationers prefer to get the longer flight over first and have the relaxation of a cruise after the land, therefore supply and demand draws the price in being higher for a Southbound cruise !

Here’s 3, 2014 Tour Southbound Package comparisons:

1.       One of my Top Cruiser Group Leaders asked for a “customized package”.  One that included “land tour and meal extras” that most folks buy after getting there.  It’s a 12N package beginning August 10, 2014 (5N’s on land through Premier Alaska and 7N cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Royal Caribbean).

Let’s look at the “Land Extras” first (2N’s Fairbanks, 2N’s Denali and 1N Anchorage):
Fairbanks, transfers from airport to Hotel – included
Fairbanks, Salmon Bake – included
http://www.akvisit.com/salmon.html
Fairbanks, Palace Theater – included
http://www.akvisit.com/palace.html
Denali - Grande Denali Lodge – upgrade to this hotel included

Denali – Katishna all day Denali Park tour & buffet lunch – included (this package is not available with any cruise line package)  http://alaskatravel.com/denali-park/kantishna-bus-tour.html
Denali – Denali Dinner Theater (Cabin Night) – watch video – included

Seward Highway - Alaska Wildlife Conservative Center – included

Drop off at the Ship

And the cruise portion, Royal Caribbean Radiance
1 Seward (Anchorage), Alaska --- 8:00 p.m.
2 Cruise Hubbard Glacier 2:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.
3 Juneau, Alaska 9:00 a.m. 9:00 p.m.
4 Skagway, Alaska 7:00 a.m. 8:30 p.m.
5 Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska 7:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m.
6 Ketchikan, Alaska 9:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m.
7 Cruise Inside Passage, Alaska --- ---
8 Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia 7:00 a.m. ---

Please note, “times in port” are very important to me.  The times on the Royal Caribbean Radiance is very good !   Give you plenty of time to take tours and then shop/walk around the town !  The cruise also gives you Hubbard Glacier, with 4 ports of call.

2.       In comparing the above Premier Customized Land Package to Royal Caribbean’s Tour 6B on August 10, 2014:  http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/cruiseDetails/itinerary.do?packageCode=RD12B406&sailDate=1140815&state=NA

“If” I could add the extra land tours and meals and replace their motor coach with our Gold Rail Service (I only have 2013 supplier rates to go by), with the discount the group has already earned for the number of folks who have book, Premier Alaska customized package is still about $15 higher for Cat K inside; $126 higher for E1 balcony (note, lower categories are available for purchase at lower rates). Look >>> Premier Alaska customized package advantages:  The Grand Denali Lodge in Denali is guaranteed and is “not” with RCI; the package is a private tour; the package includes $ 50 onboard credit on the ship & with RCI this is not available; and the group has an opportunity to lower their rate another $ 90 pp if 10 more couples go; and the RCI cruise has a longer time in Juneau, which I like (My choice is for time in Juneau to go up on the tram for some dungeness crab and the views at the restaurant).  In looking at RCI’s total package: I might be willing to wait and pay for the extras once there, and I am in favor of the night in Seward and their glacier cruise; however, I would lose my 2nd night in Denali so the full day Katishna Park Tour in Denali is not an option (at least RCI’s package includes the Tundra Tour); and understand that I may have to settle for another hotel other than Grand Denali Lodge; Princess does offer 2 good glaciers on the cruise.  It’s all in what’s more important to you.  For me, Premier Alaska Tour wins and as a guest sailing, I would push at getting 10 more couples to get the price lowered even more !

3.       In comparing the above Premier Customized Land package to Princes Cruises, Tour GB5 on August 11, 2014 on the Coral.
http://www.princess.com/find/itineraryLightbox.do?voyageCode=2423&tourCode=T4AGB5&itinCode=AWG0704AGB5&resType=T

“If” I could add the extra land tours and meals and replace their motor coach with our Gold Rail Service (I only have 2013 supplier rates to go by), with the discount the group has already earned for the number of folks who have book, Premier Alaska customized package is about equal for Princess IB inside cabins, however, the balcony BB is $122 pp more (remember, on either ship, you can purchase a lower category for a lower rate).  Look >>> Premier Alaska customized package advantages: (listed above with RCI example) to include that Princess Cruise Tour is “not” escorted; Princess package offers no rail – I don’t like that at all !  In looking at Princess total package:  I do love Denali Princess Lodge, however, it’s not high up on a mountain like the Grand Denali Lodge; Princess package offers the opportunity to stay at Mt McKinley if you like the “wilderness feeling” – great for walking, hiking (some say it’s like camping but in a hotel).  Again, it’s all in what is more important to you.  Since Princess won’t allow you to deter from this package so you can buy the rail, I would rather forfeit the chance at staying at Mt McKinley (actually, I’m not a hiker nor care to walk in the woods, nor a per-say, a wilderness type person, so I would be more concerned of getting bored; however, I understand for $10 pp (?) you can take a motor coach ride to Telkeenta city and shop) and would still stick with Premier Alaska package !

There you have it.  You literally have think about what you would like to do, even if you have never been there.  You can either do some studying on your own, or take some of my suggestions above.  Remember, there are shorter package in Alaska and even longer packages.

Also know, the only way you can take advantage of a Premier Alaska package is you either have to have your own group with a minimum of 10 couples or you have to join a group that already exist.  Which is easier, getting your own group, or riding on someone else’s, that has already the work for you ?

Remember, by September prior to the next year, most folks have already committed to their 2014 Alaska.  When looking at the Radiance of the Seas on August 10, 2014, I see that one deck is already totally sold out.  There’s nothing wrong with waiting till January or February 2014, to see which Alaska Cruise/Tour will go on sale, such as with Princess or Holland America.  Remember, unless the cruise line is offering an across the board sale in a destination, if the sale only offers specified dates and ships, these are the ones “not selling”.  Instead of “You choosing what You want”, you are basically choosing from what “other folks don’t want”.

Where is Mendenhall Glacier. Hold this on your bucket list.

I will not be writing in this blog next week.  I am traveling single (on a cruise in Canada).

Where is Mendenhall Glacier ?  Hold this on your bucket list.

In the port of Juneau.  About 10 minutes from town.

Is it worth seeing ?

I think it is.

I’ve been there, a many of time, to re-view again !

Sometimes, I don’t even take a shore tour, and just buy the transfers, out to see the glacier, from town (such as, just outside of a HA ship, near Red Onion Saloon.  The cost is about $25 round trip.

Another good price package in seeing the glacier, is when including this with a whale watching tour.

Another is … Canoeing with a tour group, all the way out to the glacier.

You can even ride the city bus for a couple of dollars !

Or why not, take a helicopter up on top of the glacier !

The above are some of the ways I have had the opportunity to see this glacier.

2013 Alaska Fishing Season is upon us

Fishing in Alaska is enjoyed by so many.  Some folks fly up, just to fish.  Others fly up early, to fish prior to a cruise.  Others, go fishing, while in ports, on their cruise.

The two ports I notice folks fishing the most, while on their cruise, is Ketchikan and Juneua.  My father and I fished, while in Juneau.  We were fishing for King Salmon.  If they're not a certain size, they have to be thrown back.

Bringing home the fish you caught is fun too.  You begin by getting it smoked and packaged, as soon as your daily fishing trip is over.  The company you fish with, has the info you need.  The cost is not in the smoking of the fish, but shipping them home.  Not much more cost than had you bought salmon in the store.  So this way, you can enjoy your own.

Happy Alaska Fishing Season !

What makes Skagway my favorite Alaska Cruise Port

Skagway.  The name itself sounds, to me, rugged.  Seems like a good name for this “shoot-out” looking town.

From Wikipedia: “Skagway (originally spelled Skaguay) is from the Tlingit name for the area, "Skagua" or "Shԍagwei" meaning "a windy place with white caps on the water”.

Not sure I’ve noticed the wind.  However, the snow capped mountains are another reason, I love this little town.

Yes, very small town.  When the ship pulls up, and you’re out on your balcony, it looks like a triangle shape or upside down Y shape little town.  With the mountains behind the town.  And mountains behind you.

Another reason I like this port, is that the ships usually pull in forward, so coming in, you can see the town from the left, from your balcony. The two main docks are about the same distance from the town (3-4 blocks).  There is transportation to the town for about $2 roundtrip.

On the right, is the rail road track.  Doesn’t matter which two main docks the ship is at, the track is right there.  So folks taking the White Pass Train and Yukon tour, have very little distance to walk.  The ship on the right, will be next to a rock bank, where people have put interesting graffitti.

That’s another reason I love this town.  I love train rides.  For me, I find that trains provide, much more room than buses or airlines.  Yes, it does rock around !

The train travels a narrow gauge up to the Yukon.  Matter of fact, you can extend your journey, by bus, and go further into the Yukon, which is what I prefer.  You do need your passports to cross into Canada.  So you must remember to bring this off the ship, for the tour.

Lots of history up the trails of this railroad.    Check out the some history and pictures.

The next reason I love this little town, is the town itself.  As mentioned above, it looks like a little shoot-out town.  There’s one main road to walk down, and it’s filled with lots of stores for shopping.

I
n general, that’s how I spend my time, each 12 times I have visited.  I take the White Pass RR and then I shop !  Two passions of mine.

Like any port, more tours are formed each year.  There’s much to choose.  Some for the out-doors folks and those with less walking (Railroad is the best for this).

Know that many Jewelry stores from the Caribbean, come up to Alaska, during it’s cruising season.  So if you’re wanting great prices like the Caribbean, Alaska is another great destination to choose.
