Ketchikan, AK – From Canned Salmon Capitol of the World to Tourism. Relaxation to Adventure. Cruise or by Land.

Will be taking a break from blogging ...Please see at bottom ... Facebook contact, SignUp4CruiseDeals, and NextCruiseGiveaway.

In the late 1800’s, Ketchikan was a cannery site.  Mostly salmon.  Today, Ketchikan continues to rely on commercial fishing for a third of its economy.

In the early 1950’s, logging, timber and their pulp mill, played a major role for jobs.  , however, due to strikes and changes in public policy, their sawmill was closed down in the early 1980’s and the pulp mill in late 1990’s.  With hundreds of loss jobs, to a well-paying career.

Today, Ketchikan is highly expressed more, as the ‘First City’.  It’s the first Alaska port, where the Alaska Marine ferries and cruise ships, coming from the south, stop. It’s only 90 miles north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Ketchikan is several miles long, however, at its widest width, it’s only 10 blocks.  Due to width and lack of space in Ketchikan, it’s why, their airport is built on another island, 3 miles away. A ferry is taken from this island to reach Ketchikan.   Ferry services begins at 6:15am and the last for the day is 9:30pm, with a current passenger cost of $6, for ages 12 & older.

It basically rains almost every day in Ketchikan, even if only a drizzle.  Their annual rain fall is between 162-200 inches.  The locals don’t use umbrellas.  Nor do their stop their routines nor outside activities, or they would never accomplish anything.

However, when the skies are clear, the beauty of this small island shines.  The background for the town is forested hills and the waterway to the front, is filled with floatplanes, fishing boards, ferries, barges, and on select dates, May through September … Cruise Ships !

A fun little town for cruise passengers and for folks who want to fly into Ketchikan for hiking, fishing, and just a week of relaxation.  Just walking the little town, down to the famous Creak and up to the Westmark Hotel, is truly interesting.

Though small island, there’s plenty to do, and new tours are added yearly.  As already mentioned, hiking and fishing !  Lots to do in Ketchikan.  A few loves are, boat ride to or float plane over the Misty Fjords, Totem Bight State Historic Park, Totem Heritage Center, Potlatch Totem Park, Alaska
Rainforest Sanctuary,  fishing, Duck Tour, and boat ride surrounding their Lighthouse.  There’s also high adventure tours, such as Zip Lining, Off-Road Jeep, and Canoe Safari.

My most favorite, which sells out quick, is the Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour.  My 2nd choice is the Crabbing/Crab Feast on Ketchikan.  Something still on my bucket list … Float Plane and Crab Feast on an island !  And LOVE ... The shopping (smile) !

I’ve been here 13 times (My 1st time to Alaska, I did not visit here).  Mostly, my times there, were a stop by cruise ship.  However, once, my dad and I flew into Ketchikan, stayed at a B&B, outside the town, and then cruised out the next day from Ketchikan,  on a yacht with Cruise West.  Later, my father and mother flew here, and stayed a week, again, at the (Sonny’s) B&B .
