Juneau, Alaska
Starting in mid-May, this stunning ocean-side community buzzes with activity.

But Alaska’s capital city of Juneau is also splendidly isolated: the only way to get here is by boat or plane. That’s perfect for cruise ship travelers, who might otherwise never have a chance to experience this captivating place.

The Juneau cruise port is located right downtown. With forest-covered mountains in the backdrop, these narrow streets twist past a mix of both modern buildings and classic-style storefronts. Explore unique shops along South Franklin Street, where hand-craft souvenirs and quirky restaurants are easy to find.

Hop the Mount Roberts Tramway and ascend 3,800 feet to the summit. This is one of the steepest tramway rides in the world. And once you reach the top, reward your bravery with a visit to the restaurant or wildlife sanctuary.

You can also head outside of town in search of adventure. Tag along with a prospector to Gold Creek for some old-fashioned gold panning or give halibut fishing a try. For the most spellbinding scenery, visit the nearby Mendenhall Glacier – this one place you have to see to believe.

We made this video to tell you more about these and other amazing shore excursions in Juneau Alaska.

Ketchikan, Alaska
This coastal Alaska town is charming, rustic and surprisingly thin.

Yes, you read that last one right. Ketchikan stretches for 31 miles along the shoreline of the Inside Passage, but the community is never more than 10 blocks wide. That makes the topography of this small city long and very narrow.

Back-dropped by heavily forested mountains, many homes and businesses here are actually built on silts out over the water. And if you’re cruising north, Ketchikan will likely be the first city you reach.

After disembarking, stroll along the historic Creek Street – a boardwalk lined with quaint shops and compelling views. When it’s time to dine, seek out some of the finest seafood restaurants in town: the halibut, salmon and crab here are amazing.

Delve into native culture at the Totem Heritage Center or learn more about the Alaska wilderness at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. Then head just 10-15 minutes outside of town to explore the pristine outdoors – including some great spots to see bears. This video will tell you more about shore excursions in Ketchikan.

Skagway.  This historic frontier town is filled with stories about gunfights, bandits and an unquenchable thirst for gold.

Most of Skagway, Alaska is set within the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. And although the year-round population here sits at just 950 locals, the summer brings a boom of travelers who want to experience a taste of the region’s colorful history.

Many of these visitors arrive by cruise ship at one of the town’s three deep-water berths. From there, downtown is just 10 minutes away. Stroll along wooden sidewalks past false-front shops and beautifully restored buildings dating back to the 1900s.

Learn about Alaska’s most notorious outlaw, Soapy Smith, by taking in the ‘Days of ‘98’ theatre production and then drop by the historic Red Onion Saloon to unwind.

If you’re up for a short hike, head to the lookout  just outside of town for sweeping views of Skagway and Lynn Canal. Or take a ride on the iconic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, which passes by waterfalls, gorges and countless stunning vistas.

This video shows you more about the best Skagway, Alaska, shore excursions and activities.
