Alaska – Visit Ketchikan’s Southeast Alaska Discover Center & Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau

Ketchikan – Southeast Alaska Discovery Center (info from the center)

At the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center in downtown Ketchikan, you can explore the unique natural and cultural history of the Tongass National Forest, a place where people have lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years. Stroll through a lush rainforest, visit a re-created native fishing village and learn how the Tongass sustains Southeast Alaska communities today. You can also hear the story of the forest in person from one of our friendly Forest Service rangers, enjoy a film in our comfortable theatre or help your kids become Junior Rangers. In the summer, join a ranger for a guided walk and learn about Ketchikan's enduring ties to the rainforest.

We are located at 50 Main Street, just a short walk from the cruise ship docks. Visit our directions page for driving or walking directions.

We're open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. all summer long. Admission is just $5 for adults (CC or cash accepted only), and includes access to all of the center's exhibits, films and ranger programs. Kids are free when accompanied by an adult, and we honor and sell all of the America the Beautiful federal passes.

Alaska is home to a wide variety of wild Pacific Alaskan salmon. Did you know ? And terms

Found this insight from AlasakSalmon.com:

Did you know ?
*Rainbow, or Steel Head trout are a type of pacific salmon
*Less than one out of every thousand salmon eggs live to be spawning adults
*Salmon is a healthy food that is high in vitamin D, protein, and omega-3.
*Alaska Salmon run at different times depending on the location and the species of salmon.

Alaska is home to a wide variety of wild Pacific Alaskan salmon.
King Chinook Salmon
Silver Coho Salmon
Red Sockeye Salmon
Pink Humpback Salmon
Chum Keta Salmon
Cutthroat Trout Salmon
Steelhead Trout Salmon

Terms:
Anadromous - A fish that spawns in fresh water but lives the majority of their lives in saltwater.
Salmonid - Family of fish that includes salmon, trout, and whitefish.
Alevin - A salmonid that has hatched from the egg, but the egg sac is still attached. The egg sac provides nourishment until the salmonid is able to catch food.
Fry - The name for a juvenile salmon that has absorbed its egg sac and is rearing in the stream.
Kype - The hooked jaw many male salmon develop during spawning
Parr - A large juvenile salmonid, sometimes called a fingerling, during this stage between a fry and a smolt.
Smolt - A juvenile salmonid that will soon enter the ocean. During this stage, the fish changes from the camouflage spots to a sliver chrome color.
Substrate - Material such as rocks and gravel that make up a stream bottom.

The cruise lines offer opportunities for packages ‘and’ there are many private charters available.  These tours ashore, sell out quickly because they are so very popular !

Not just men sign up for these type excursions, but women too.  I’ve been with my father !  Matter of fact, I was the only one that day, who caught 2, that were large enough to keep. We had them smoked and shipped home. Totally delightful, to come home and enjoy salmon you caught yourself.

The cost to have them package is not expensive at all. To ship, different story.  But it’s not much different in cost, than had you gone to your local grocer and bought fresh salmon !

Though I won’t be fishing on my upcoming cruise to Alaska in June, I am totally looking forward to viewing salmon in Ketchikan … At the famous creek !

Isn’t it time to visit Alaska and try out some salmon fishing ?
Call me & get away to Alaska !

Alaska. Never been ? What’s the hold up ? Cost ? Time off from work ? Let me help you get there NOW ! 2016 or 2017 !

So many folks have had the opportunity to adventure to Alaska.  Lots, like me, have been more than once.

I hear from folks, who have yet to experience Alaska, how it’s high on their bucket list.  My question, ‘What cha waiting for’ ?

Not only, are none of us getting any younger (hehehe), there is so many other destination in the worl to see.  Every day, as we don’t reach out in fulfilling our travel bucket list, is another day, we get further behind in doing so !

Is cost, holding your back ?
If you are flexible in your travel dates, there are truly ways to help keep your cost down.
My ‘cheat sheets’ can help you.  www.VivianWebb.com
Call me, let me help you see what you need to see.

Is it time off from work, holding you back ?
Some folks want to see as much of Alaska as they can, when they first go, in case there’s not another chance in returning.  I totally understand  !
However, if you don’t have 2 weeks, and this is what is holding you back, when will you ever have 2 weeks ?
At retirement ?
Why wait ?
Again waiting, continues to hold back on your travel bucket list !
Why not consider a shorter time in Alaska, so you can fit this in your schedule now.
And later on, when you have 2 weeks, and want to venture again, do so then !
However, you will want to have a minimum of 8-9 days.
And if you can swing 11, you could see even  more.
Call me, let’s talk.

Alaska Tip. Folks ask, which cruise line ? Do I, for myself, choose based on cruise line personality or added value benefits ?

Usually, when customers call for their first cruise, I’m trying to find out their own personality, in trying to match up with a specific cruise line.  Unless folks only looking for price.

In some cases, with Alaska, folks still looking, just for price. However, in my opinion, you can miss out on some of the essentials or popularities, if only choosing by price.

Such as, price can leave you with …

•             Missed main ports

•             Minimal times in port

•             Not the most popular glacier to see

Yet, that’s not always the case.  You could actually just choose your favorite cruise line and miss out on added value available !

Whether adding a land package or not, I tend to look deep at what the different cruises are offering, before deciding which cruise.  Then I turn to look at the land offers.

However, I keep in mind, when I’m including a land package, I tend to look more at Princess or Holland America, because their train portion, involves Denali (or near) to Anchorage or to the ship. Where as other cruises lines do not.

I have a total “set way” of dissecting the many different packages, before deciding which one for myself (and guiding others).  I’m looking for parts of the puzzle to be included.  So I’m not as specific, to which cruise line, till I see the puzzle, I’m including a land package.

When you’re ready for me to help you too, with the puzzle, call me !  Alaska continues to be my most favorite destination. And try to get there every other year, if not every year.

Matter of fact, one of the Alaska cruises I have my eye on right now in 2017, is Royal Caribbean, May 17 for 9 nights.  Call me and join me. We have reserved space.

Do I pre-purchase my shore excursions for my Alaska cruise ?

Next Alaska blog post ...April 20

Do I pre-purchase my shore excursions for my Alaska cruise ?
For the most part, my answer is yes.
When might the answer be no, just wait ?

A few typical questions to ask yourself:

·         Do you have select tours or activities you truly don’t want to miss ?

·         Do you know which tours may sell out quickly ?

·         Do you normally purchase your tours ashore with the cruise line ?

·         Do you know the latest time, you must be off the ship in port, to partake in a tour, you’re wanting to wait and purchase ashore ?

·         Do you know which tours will be offered, after you are in port ?

·         Are you traveling with a group ?  Can you count on all, to be on time, to depart the ship ?

Like on any cruise or port, select tours sell out quickly with the cruise lines.  Ex.  Deadliest Catch in Juneau.  Sometimes, you never see the tour offered, because it is already sold out by the time you decide to look at tours.

Some tours have early departure. Ex.  Train in Skagway.  Not to mention, you have to walk to town, to purchase, once on shore.  Yes,  you can possibly purchase the afternoon train, if your ship is in port that long.

Tours are available, once on shore, for most ports.  But again, must you depart the ship early ?  Will you be docked near locations to make purchase ?  Will there be a line, for transportation, to get to town ?  Unless you do lots of research, many of these answers, you won’t know till you arrive.  Cruise Lines do not necessarily have such answers.  Even if they do, this can change.  Calling the port, you may get more specific answers of where the ship may dock.

When you may want to wait till port, to decide ?  When deciding based on weather, may not plan to do anything, or want to take pot-luck over what may be available.
Ex.  Tram in Juneau.  Could be a raining foggy day.
Ex.  Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau.  If you only want to travel out there, there are buses that go (city transportation and available tours).

If you wait to purchase select tours ashore, based on a rain/weather, you could miss out.  Weather changes in Alaska.  Tours that aren’t available in the morning, may be fine by afternoon.  Select tours, if you purchase with the cruise line and the weather it too bad, the cruise line will cancel and refund your money.  But if you just decide you don’t want to go, due to weather, after pre-purchase, then it is non-refundable, day of tour.

Over first 10 times to Alaska, I pre-purchased my tours.  There were so many things I wanted to see and do and not miss.

Today, I’ve done most everything I want to do.

In Ketchikan, I just enjoy walking the town.  And taking pictures.  And partaking in a little halibut, usually available at the Creek.

In Juneau, I love to go to Mendenhall Glacier.  I’ve taken the city transportation and purchased a $25 bus ride, to get closer, in walking.  I like to go up on the tram and purchase Dungeons Crab.  And I love to walk the town and visit the Red Dog Saloon.

In Skagway,  I love to go into the Yukon. Round trip by bus (I’ve done the train 10 times ?). So I usually still purchase this in advance.  However, I purchase from our Shore Excursion Group Team (instead of the cruise line) and there is another company I often use.  And my reason ? To know what time to get off the ship, since they usually leave as soon as the ship docks.

In Sitka, I still choose the same tour, over and over … Eagle Rapture Center.  So I usually buy this thru the cruise line.

Icy Straight.  I probably would pre-purchase their tours here.  They could sell out, with many folks opting to do something here.  I’ve done the bear watching and I love the cooking class and dancers here.  Last time, I just walk around.

In Haines.  If I wanted to go to Skagway,  I would pre-purchase this tour.  FYI – I don’t usually choose a cruise with this itinerary, unless I’ve saved a lot of $$, for the extra cost to go to Skagway.  I’ve basically done all I want here, so don’t know what I would opt to do, never time my cruise included this port.

In Victoria, I now just go into the town.  I’ve done the Butchard Gardens several times.  However, if by chance, my cruise was there all day, I would preplan a tour.

More and more shore excursions are offered in each port each year.  So if you’ve been several times to Alaska, you may want to take a look at the new options available for your next cruise there.

If it’s your first time to Alaska, take the time to look over all your options, far in advance.  Why miss out.  So though I’ve been many times, and know which may be available for purchase in port, for you, again, I suggest pre-purchase.

I also hope you have purchased your Alaska Cruise from someone who has been to Alaska. to help you will excursions ashore.  Look to a travel agent for a cruise such as this.

I would love to help you with your Alaska cruise.  Not just for the tours, but before you decide your cruise and land package to Alaska !  Call me.  2016 and 2017 !  Mention $$'s to charity upon your call !

Choosing an Alaska cruise, is not as quick & simple as choosing a Caribbean cruise. You need “time”, but 1st, you need learn what to look for ! Call me ! And join me, 2017, for a cruise with 6 ports.

Next article April 7 ... Now, every other week !

Had a returning client call me this week, only to figure, he knew exactly what he wanted, for this Alaska cruise.  As I told him, I can either sell you exactly what you ask for, or we can look together, at your choice, and then you determine.     He chose, that we look together at options, so that he could decide, if this 1st choice, was best for him.

In my opinion, decided “Which cruise”, shouldn’t be taken light heartedly !  How you go about choosing your Caribbean cruises, is often, “which port have I not been to before”, right ?

With Alaska, you may not go here but once, right ?  Though which ports is your ship including is important, it’s also as important, which ones are they NOT !  For the most part, Alaska cruises do not include every available option. Want to know which ones you should consider to include ?  Call me ! (434/800) 237-3832

Which cruise in 2017 will include 6 ports ?  Join me in 2017 !  Deadline March 23, 2016. Yes, deadline is 2016 and sail to Alaska in 2017 ! (434/800) 237-3832

Alaska Tip. Buy now for 2017 ? See my take & reason !

Wave Season 2016 has been somewhat different this  year !  While 70% of my customers buy their next vacation “prior to” the upcoming year, usually another 20% buy during Wave Season.  January through mid-March.  Another 10%, usually buy, last minute, “during the year”.

As mentioned this year has been different !
How ?

The cruise lines have many cruises already out and available for purchase for 2017.  To include Alaska.  Normally the cruise lines are not ready for “the next year” Alaska season, till just before or after the upcoming season begins.

It’s why this season has been different in “vacation buying”. Folks are actually thinking 2017.  Whether it’s folks who don’t have a vacation booked for 2016 and “those who do” !

What’s my take on buying 2017 Alaska now ?
Yes.
Why ?
Have you seen all the deals ?

Know … The more sailings “sold” an any given sail date … That date is subjected to going up in rate.
You want to miss the lowest available rate ?  The best cruise line offers ?
Then don’t wait !  Don’t wait in making your 2017 Alaska purchase.

Call me today ! (434/800) 237-3832
And allow me to share with you & get you on your way … With my 13 experiences there.  #14, this June (2016).
